An herbal formula combines at least two and generally no more than 5-7 herbs total. The advantage of a custom blend is to create synergy, meaning the combined effect of two or more herbs in a formula is greater than the sum of their separate effects. 

There are specific herbs that consistently work well for a specific condition.  Adding additional herbs can encourage and optimize effectiveness in the course of treatment and additional herbs can also harmonize and/or temper stronger acting herbs in a formula.
